This is a picture of a model wearing someone else’s pants. It seems like too dumb of a trick to convince a person to start a fad diet, but tactics like this work every day.

Be careful of anything that promises quick and easy results… that usually means you are injuring your body by pushing it out of balance. Some diets out there are not “safe” - they rely on unsafe amounts of stimulants, laxatives and diuretics or ask you to starve your body of certain necessary types of nutrients. This can not only injure your internal organs, dehydrate you and (coupled with inactivity) burn off your useful muscle tissue, but you will notice the fat come back right after you end the diet. When you think about it, a “diet” is just someone else’s recommendation for what to eat and drink, when and in what quantities. Do all those people have your health as their top priority? Do they all have the medical facts to know if their “diet” will work or if it will hurt you in the process?

Often these diets are based on “herbal supplements” which have active ingredients whose effectiveness and long term results on your body have not been evaluated and approved by the FDA with the same scrutiny that prescription drugs have. It’s not to say that supplements are all bad, many supplements are healthful and may be effective for certain properties. For example, let’s say you have one that is a wonderful antioxidant - but if irresponsibly marketed as a miracle diet solution and recommended for use in large quantities, it could be dangerous. That’s the sort of thing that ticks us off.

You have already run into some fake success stories that tell you about some working mom’s remarkable weight loss story using a particular product that she is so thankful to. Don’t believe it. Chances are that lady is a fake person invented to promote that product. Think. Check your common sense when a celebrity who has always been thin comes out to tell you about a new diet. What’s the chance they ever used it? Or consider if you should take diet advice from someone who has never been able to control their weight? Don’t let a celebrity endorsement or carefully crafted promotion stop you from checking your common sense.

Of course we want to think some of the miracle diets work, we could ditch 30 unwanted pounds in time for the summer, but it’s those fantasies the scammers take advantage of, the same way casinos make money off financially desperate people, by creating an illusion of possibility. Don’t gamble with your health. Overuse of diuretic products can actually kill you!

It’s easy to be frustrated with our bodies for not looking good, but if we go after these short-term solutions, the problem will never be solved. In actuality, fad diets are a punishment on your body rather than a service to it. Ask your doctor or your pharmacist about the proven effectiveness and potential risks of any weight loss solution you are curious about rather than believing an internet testimonial of someone you don’t know. Weight loss and improved health are possible for anyone by making a commitment to move more and eat smarter.
