Any diet that springs from a wealth of secret ancient knowledge from another culture should set off warning buzzers for you. Do the research for yourself if you like... you should if you are planning to do one of these "just discovered" diets. Look at the warnings from government agencies and medical organizations, people who have nothing to gain from you wasting your money on a fad diet. They’ll tell you what we believe: that those diets are bunk, a waste of your money, and potentially dangerous to you.
"Any claims that you can lose weight effortlessly are false. The only proven way to lose weight is either to reduce the number of calories you eat or to increase the number of calories you burn off through exercise. Most experts recommend a combination of both."
"When consumed in high enough amounts, for a long enough time, or in combination with certain other substances, all chemicals can be toxic, including nutrients, plant components, and other biologically active ingredients."
"The term "natural" on labels is not well defined and is sometimes used ambiguously to imply unsubstantiated benefits or safety. For example, many weight-loss products claim to be "natural" or "herbal" but this doesn't necessarily make them safe. Their ingredients may interact with drugs or may be dangerous for people with certain medical conditions."
"Dietary supplement manufacturers may not necessarily include warnings about potential adverse effects on the labels of their products."
"A product recall of a dietary supplement is voluntary and while many manufacturers do their best, a recall does not necessarily remove all harmful products from the marketplace."
Food & Drug Administration - The Center for Food Safety & Applied Nutrition
"Be extremely cautious about herbal supplements manufactured outside the United States. Many European herbs are highly regulated and standardized. But toxic ingredients and prescription drugs have been found in some herbal supplements manufactured in other countries."
"As a general rule, don't take any medications - prescription, OTC or herbal - when you're pregnant or breast-feeding unless your doctor approves. Medications that may be safe for you as an adult may be harmful to your fetus or your breast-feeding infant."
"Your colon knows how to do its job, constantly shedding old cells, absorbing nutrients and keeping a delicate balance of bacteria and natural chemicals. Interfering with this process can hurt or destroy these relationships, meaning the colon won't work as well as it should. Colon cleansing is unnecessary, and medical doctors do not advise you to do this."
"People with an eating disorder will sometimes turn to diuretic abuse as a means to lose or control their weight. In their minds, they believe the diuretic is helping to control their weight, but in reality, it is just reducing the amount of water in the body. This can be dangerous as diuretic abuse symptoms can include a fluid and electrolyte imbalance in the body which is potentially fatal."
